How to Identify Lemon

👁️ Appearance Characteristics

Leaves: Leaves are evergreen, alternate, oval-elliptical, with serrated margins, and possess a distinct aromatic scent when crushed.

Stem: The stem is woody, often thorny, with smooth greenish-brown bark on young branches, maturing to a rougher texture.

Fruit/Flower: The fruit is typically oval to elliptical, bright yellow when ripe, with a distinctive nipple-like protuberance at one end. The rind is thick, dimpled, and highly aromatic. The pulp is segmented, juicy, and intensely sour.

🌱 Where Does Lemon Grow?

Originating from Asia, Lemon is now cultivated globally in regions with suitable climates due to its high demand for culinary and medicinal uses.

  • India (especially Southern India)
  • Mediterranean countries (Spain, Italy)
  • USA (California, Florida)
  • Mexico
  • China

⚠️ Do Not Confuse With

Lemon is often confused with Lime (Citrus aurantifolia or Citrus latifolia). Limes are generally smaller, rounder, greener, and have a more floral or less intensely sour flavor. Citron (Citrus medica) is another related fruit with a much thicker rind and less juice.

Lemon in Siddha Medicine

Traditional Reference Traditional Reference 🟤

In Siddha, Elumichai is considered a powerful digestive stimulant, detoxifier, and coolant (despite its sourness, its post-digestive effect - Vipaka - is sweet, and its potency - Veerya - is cooling). It is used to alleviate indigestion, fevers, respiratory issues, and skin ailments. It balances Pitta and Kapha due to its sourness and astringent qualities, but excessive use can aggravate Vata.
